What Is Shadow Work?
As the name suggests, shadow work is about exploring the parts of yourself that you can’t see. It’s also known as “the work on the Shadow Self”.
Your shadow is the unconscious part of your personality. It’s made up of repressed ideas, traits, and instincts we don’t want to admit to ourselves.
The term ‘shadow work’ was coined by Carl Jung in his famous book “Man And His Symbols“.
Carl Jung was a psychiatrist who lived in Switzerland during the late 1800s into the mid 1900s.
His work is significant because he helped popularize psychological concepts such as introversion and extraversion, archetypes, synchronicity, and most importantly for our purposes today, shadow work.
The concept of shadow work stems from Jung’s theory of personality types. He believed that within each person is an unconscious aspect that houses all of your repressed emotions, beliefs, and desires.
The shadow is an archetype that represents all our ignored aspects, the parts of ourselves we don’t want to see but still have a strong influence on our personality.
Most people think of their shadow as something negative, this is true your shadow self is where you put all your undesirable traits and emotions.
However, it can also be positive, the shadow self is a storehouse of positive traits and abilities we haven’t acknowledged in ourselves yet.
It helps you integrate your repressed thoughts, emotions, and memories into your conscious mind.
This technique makes you aware of the parts of your personality that you hide from others and yourself.
Shadow work allows you to confront your insecurities, take responsibility for your actions, and overcome the doubts holding you back.
The shadow is that part of you that you deny and repress, those parts of yourself that you have deemed unacceptable.
It’s what you think makes you unloveable, unworthy, or not good enough.
What does it mean spiritually
Shadow work is a powerful tool for healing, but it also has a spiritual meaning and purpose, working to understand our shadow side opens the door to spirituality.
We all have a spirit that is part of us and in us at the same time, our spiritual self is one of our most powerful selves.
When we explore this side of ourselves, we’re able to heal old wounds, reconnect with parts of ourselves that have been neglected.
And helps us to learn about who we are without all the trappings of ego and its defense mechanisms.
The shadow self is an unconscious aspect of the personality that the conscious ego does not identify in itself.
Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one’s personality,
It includes the aspects of yourself that are hidden from your conscious mind for whatever reason.
Shadow Work as a spiritual practice is about diving into the deepest parts of our inner selves and bringing them to light.
It’s about becoming aware of our negative beliefs, habits, and unconscious patterns and turning them into wisdom and power.
Shadow work is a way to gain more self-awareness so that we can make our lives what we truly want them to be.
How to Start Working on Your Shadows
Shadow work can be difficult or can be simple depending on what you’re trying to do.
Shadow work, is the process of exploring your unconscious mind and working through any issues that may be holding you back.
The first step of shadow work is identifying your shadows, this can be done by keeping a journal, writing down thoughts and feelings on paper, or simply sitting in silence.
It’s a fantastic way to heal relationships, heal your body, and heal yourself from trauma.

This could be anything from difficult emotions and thoughts, bad habits, or challenging relationships.

Ask yourself if there’s anything that needs healing that you’re not dealing with or want to heal.
And remember, these are all aspects of life we must confront in order to grow as people and deepen our understanding of ourselves.

You can do this through bodywork, like massages, meditation, yoga, or tai chi.
Also through creative activities like art-making, or even more simply through talking with friends about what’s going on.
And listening closely when they share with you what’s happening for them in their own lives.
By exploring these areas of our lives, we can begin to heal wounds in a safe space provided we have someone who understands us and can support us along the way.
Get comfortable with your dark side
Many of us have a deep-seated fear of our own dark side. We may not like that part about ourselves and we may not want to explore it.
However, this is one of the most important aspects of shadow work. It’s important to get comfortable with your dark side so that you can learn more about yourself.
Reflect on your past and current patterns
Take a look at your past to see where you are repeating old patterns. Reflect on what has made you feel shame, guilt, or anger.
What were the consequences of those emotions in the past? How have they affected your relationships and mental health?
How to stop self-sabotage
It doesn’t matter how much success you have or what your life looks like on the outside. On the inside, if you aren’t happy with it, you’ll find a way to sabotage yourself.
